I read about this effort to produce zone 5 hardy artichokes in Joseph Tychonievich's book Plant Breeding for the Home Gardener and then found the link above when I did a bit of searching to see if he had any progress...he has! In the link you'll see that he has artichokes that have survived his zone 5 with a low of -24 last winter (dang polar vortex).
I imagine that means that zone 5 hardy cardoon will be possible too.
He also mentions that he's working on a zone 5 hardy perennial kale.
I'm a big fan of zone pushing breeding efforts as I'm also in zone 5. I'm working to try and do the same for citrus and figs.
