According to the genetic studies C. foetidissima is unexpectedly genetically close to hullless C. pepo's (var. styriaca). Crosses between the two species have been known to occur in the fields of pepo growers where foetidissima ranges. This brings up the tantalizing possibility of a disease resistant perennial naked seeded pumpkin. By selecting for seed, the problem of foetidissima's irredeemably bitter flesh could be skipped over. The usual obstacles apply, but this project may be within the realm of possibility.
