Anyone doing any work with this? On my long list of interests, I am curious about selecting for less tortuous plants though, in terms of a useful permie feature, these thorns could be used to protect other plants.

Some work has already been done with this, I just received four varieties, I hope that they will be less seedy and a bit more juicy than the common variety. What I like is their frost resistance, it's not so common in solanaceae species, another one with frost resistance is solanum aviculare, but these berries aren't really my taste. Also in the solanaceae is cyphomandra corymbiflora, growing well in pots, with a familiar cyphomandra leaf smell , and producing some fruits which need some improvement to make them really tasty. And solanum can be very spiny, solanum atropurpureum for instance (as far as I know the berries aren't edible), which could even give some more protection...
