Hopniss/groundnut (apios americana) for pod/peas production

I dont know what a breeding toward pod production could look like, but at least it seems a good plan to acquire some diploids cultivars to see if it produce pods and seeds under every ones climate? If caragana can provide peas from dry alkaline soils, apios could provide peas from wet or acidic soils.

Many of the selections of groundnuts are naturally occurring triploids distributed by the Native Americans. Although usually more vigorous with better tuber production, triploids are known not to produce seeds. We were fortunate to some nice selections of groundnuts that are diploids and produce the pea pods and tasty peas along with good tuber production. These were grown from seed from Virgina. Each plant will be genetically different with different types of tubers. Pea production is suppose to be very good with this strain.

i get some but not many flowers/pods from oikos's 'densituberous' variety, but they never seem to ripen.

Getting a cold hardy perennial bean production plant sounds like such a wonderful thing. Has there been any progress finding heavy seed bearing plants? EFN is offering seeds from diploid wild plants in NJ so I ordered a few packets to see if any resulting plants might be good parents for breeding and wrote to Dr. Cannon at Iowa State to see if he's seen any heavy seed bearers in their collection.
