I want to try and breed new medlar varieties and so i planted 4 different ones so far. Despite me growing some of these plants for three years now i have never eaten a medlar yet.
The first one is the kurpfalzmispel, a medlar found in the kurpfalz in germany also known as suessmispel (sweet medlar). Having very low levels of bitterness and the highest sugar content of all medlars it is edible raw without waiting for frost or bletting them. Grafted on quince rootstock.
Second is monstrueuse d'evreinoff. The largest of all french medlar varieties. Fruit has 7cm diameter. Grafted on hawthorn.
Next is an unknown variety i bought in a local tree nursery. Unfortunately the guy had no clue what it was but told me it was a cultivated,large-fruited variety
And the last one is large russian that i only got recently. Another very large variety like the monstrueuse d'evreinoff
I hope they will eventually flower and make fruit. I can't wait to taste and compare them. They have already flowered repeatedly but fruit was always aborted. Also i had to move all my plants recently again which doesn't help. I want to try and cross some of these varieties and breed new ones but i read that breaking the dormancy of medlar seeds is quite complicated. Crossing the sweet medlar with one of the gigantic ones would be great to obtain a large sweet tasting one. I would like to know how many medlar varieties there are. Is there anyone else growing medlar here?
